accessible architecture at KO&Co

We are thrilled to introduce our latest addition to the Youngcare portfolio; Youngcare East Brisbane. This project has been designed according to Specialist Disability Accommodation standards, and is a reflection of architecture’s ability to provide a dignifying home to suit its resident’s needs.

Accessible architecture is a key tenet of KO&Co’s ethos, and is reflected in our repertoire of projects. Beenleigh State Special School and Goodna State Special School are only a few amongst our projects striving to produce inclusive architecture.

The S.P.A.C.E project takes this a step further, creating a third space for young people with disabilities.

KO&Co’s long standing expertise in the area has been a valuable tool in Youngcare East Brisbane’s design, and its implementation has been subtle and seamless. It only takes a few small and intentional changes to create an accessible space.

Accessibility most impacts the kitchen and bathroom. The obvious details in a bathroom include grab rails and a shower seat. More subtly, features include a longer handle on the sink mixer and sufficient clearance beneath the basin to tuck in a wheelchair, both of which can be seen in our Musgrave Road Studio, to name a few.

Moreover, the kitchen is often considered the heart of the home, and that is no different for people with greater accessibility needs. We made the choice to provide an accessible kitchen in our Musgrave Road Studio, however we've provided several throughout our portfolio, including in Youngcare East Brisbane.

There are several impactful changes to be noted in the image above. A few key decisions include the side opening oven, clearance beneath the bench for a wheelchair, a height-adjustable table, and shifting the mixer from the rear of the sink to its side.

Accessible architecture in the home is only the beginning. These features extending into the workplace is a significant step for those who need it, with minimal impact on those who don't.
